Carlos Slim Helú


Carlos Slim Helú , born 28  January  1940 in Mexico , is a businessman Mexican from a family of immigrants Lebanese Maronite Catholics (both parents are of Lebanese origin). In 2012, it is still considered the man the world's richest , with assets of 69 billion of U.S. dollars according to the magazine Forbes 1 , which establishes an annual ranking of global wealth. Its companies, including Telmex and Grupo Carso 2 , perform 2 to 3% of GDP and Mexico account for 10% of the market capitalization of Mexico 3 .


Biography

At university, he uses his talents in mathematics to pay part of his studies. In 1961, he was an engineer graduated from UNAM and opened a real estate brokerage firm. At the same time it strengthens its ties with the powerful Lebanese community by marrying in 1966, Soumaya Gemayel Domit, niece of President Amine Gemayel and Bachir Gemayel . He is a widower since March 7, 1999 and had six children. Four of them, Caroline, Carlos, Marco Antonio and Patricio companies are involved in their father in key positions and take daily strategic decisions, thus helping to consolidate its heritage.

He began his financial career by buying and selling real estate in the center of the city of Mexico . At the same time, he buys small businesses that prospered, thus consolidating his fortune in the 1980s. In 1982, he took advantage of the financial crisis to buy many companies, Seguros de Mexico for 44 million U.S. dollars (it is currently 2.5 billion ).

In 1990, supported by his political friends whose president Carlos Salinas , he formed a consortium and bought the first company of telecommunications in Mexico ( Telmex ), sold by the State during the presidency of Salinas. The telecommunications market in Mexico is still not very open to competition. Through his political influence, he has managed to keep Telmex in a quasi-monopoly. In 1997, he underwent open heart surgery and leaves the executive presidency of his companies.

According to the magazine Fortune , in August 2007 , Carlos Slim has surpassed Bill Gates , founder of Microsoft , to become the richest man in the world, with 59 billion U.S. dollars. The magazine estimated he earned 12 billion dollars over the first half of 2007, mainly due to its stock market investments.
Through its foundation, it gives 5 ​​billion dollars in 2006 and plans to give twice between 2007 and 2010 3 . He announced in early August 2007 its intention to launch a plan of 300 million dollars for the construction of 100 new schools in Mexico.

In February 2008, he became the second largest shareholder of U.S. newspaper The New York Times . In late 2008, a rumor says it is negotiating to buy Honda Racing F1 Team and align their own team on the starting grid of the world championship of Formula 1 2009 .
